Manual Lymphatic Drainage for Dysautonomia & POTS

Support for the Nervous System

Dysautonomia is a general term for conditions that affect the autonomic nervous system—the system that helps regulate functions such as heart rate, blood pressure, digestion, sweating, bladder function, and temperature control. Symptoms can vary widely and may include lightheadedness, rapid heart rate when standing, fatigue, digestive or bladder changes, sleep difficulties, and exercise intolerance. Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) is one type of dysautonomia. Some people also experience autonomic symptoms following a viral illness, including COVID-19.

Effects of MLD and Massage

Gentle Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) and therapeutic massage may be useful complementary approaches for some people with dysautonomia-related symptoms. Slow, rhythmic techniques, comfortable positioning, relaxed breathing, and a calm treatment environment may help support relaxation and body awareness. MLD is a light-touch technique designed to support the movement of lymphatic fluid through the body. Depending on your symptoms and medical history, treatment may also focus on areas affected by a sense of heaviness, swelling, or fluid retention. Your session will be adapted to your tolerance, including positioning, pressure, pacing, and duration.

Responses to treatment vary. Some people notice a short-term sense of relaxation or reduced discomfort, while others may require a series of appropriately spaced sessions. I can also teach gentle, individualized self-care techniques when appropriate.

Massage and MLD are complementary services and are not a substitute for diagnosis or treatment from a qualified medical professional. If you have POTS, unexplained swelling, fainting, significant blood-pressure changes, heart or vascular conditions, or other complex medical concerns, please consult your healthcare provider before scheduling.

If you would like to learn more about how MLD or therapeutic massage might fit into your individual care plan, schedule a complimentary consultation with Dr. Wendy.
